First Look: 12mail Video Messenger for iPhone

The first time I saw the classic movie “2001: A Space Odyssey,” I was 10 years old. If the story and the underlying meaning were confusing to me as a kid, the futuristic technology wasn’t, and I liked the video communications devices and the flat Newspad.

It’s almost 9 years late (2010), but we finally have a cool way to communicate with video, and it doesn’t require using a wall-mounted AT&T pay phone. 12mail Video Messenger [iTunes Link] for iPhone brings clear, fast video messaging to your device in 12-second chunks.

An offshoot of 12seconds.tv, 12mail Video Messenger grabs up to a 12 second video on the iPhone 3GS and delivers it to your Facebook and Twitter pals with push notification. If your buds don’t have 12mail, they can view the video on their Facebook wall or through Twitter.

While there’s not a lot you can say in 12 seconds, the app is great for sending friends short video blips, showing them something funny, or inviting them to join you for a drink. Since 12mail uses geolocation, your friends will know just where you sent your message from.

Some folks may wonder about the advantages of 12mail over MMS, particularly since AT&T is supposed to finally “flip the switch” on that service today. Those advantages are the integration with Facebook and Twitter, as well as the fact that this won’t use up your text message allotment.

12mail is fairly simple to use, although I had some issues returning a video message to a person who had just been added to my Twitter “following” list. A query to 12mail’s tech support got me a quick response, and I found out that I just needed to tap the refresh button in the top left corner of the list of Twitter users to get the latest people that I’m following. One other little bug seems to be that the “tilt iPhone to start recording” function doesn’t work, at least not for me. If you don’t have an iPhone that supports video recording, you can still record audio and take one picture to illustrate what’s going on.

If you’re a Twitter or Facebook user, particularly one with an iPhone 3GS, installing 12mail is a no-brainer. It’s fun, it’s free, and it’s a taste of the future.

Indian Man accused of Raping a Dog

This the first of its kind case in India in which a crime against an animal is being treated on par with a crime against humans, the prosecution is going to tenuous lengths to prove the rape of a dog.

A 26-year-old taxi driver from Mumbai, charged with having sexual intercourse with a dog, told a sessions court that he should be given bail because the police was not in a position to record the victim’s statement.

Mahesh Kamat was arrested from Tardeo on August 30 and booked under section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). It deals with offences relating to ‘‘unnatural sex’’; cops also slapped him with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act. However, Kamat — in custody since his arrest — pleaded that the PCA was not applicable to him as the dog he was charged of having intercourse with was a ‘‘stray’’ and not a ‘‘pet dog’’. He also said that he had been falsely implicated in the case.

The court though turned down the plea saying there was enough evidence against him. Moreover, it said that Kamat’s alleged offence had disturbed the residents of the area and the act amounted to cruelty to an animal.

Path-breaking steps are being taken like semen samples, injury marks and dog’s hair in the nails of the suspect, used in patently non-consensual sex. This case is being seen to bring in a historic change when Section 377 of the Indian penal code would be used to punish people for unnatural sex. However the case of stray dog in Tardeo, which was allegedly raped by a taxi driver, shows how the authorities are still unclear how to handle such incidents. On the first night, the police were not sure if they should lodge the case and find a section to charge the accused.

Adidas And Puma End 60-Year Feud

The German sportswear companies Puma and Adidas are to end a feud started 60 years ago by their founding brothers. Adi Dassler (who founded Adidas) and Rudolf Dassler (who founded Ruda, later changed to Puma) started making sports shoes together in their mother’s wash-room in the 1920s.

They fell out during World War II, probably over political differences, and founded firms on either side of a river in southern Germany. On Monday, September 21, employees of both companies will shake hands and then play a football match.

Kanye West’s Taylor Swift Interruption Planned?

It’s been a little bit of a rumor since Kanye West snapped up the mic from Taylor Swift, that she was in on it. Just like Eminem was in on the whole Sacha Baron Cohen butt-in-the-face mess.

It was also said that this entire exchange was arranged at the request of Jay-Z. MTV execs reportedly asked Hov to perform at the awards show, and he said that he would do it if his lady, Beyonce, was made to look really good and was given a performance of her own. Enter Kanye West:
A Jay-Z staffer said this:
This was all a huge publicity stunt set up by Jay-Z. MTV wanted him to perform at the end of the show and he said on one condition – they gave Beyonce a performance and made her look good. And so, the whole Taylor Swift fiasco was born. Jay called up Kanye and asked him to do it for him because Kanye doesn’t mind being seen as a jackass and it’d be believable if he did it. So when Beyonce let Taylor finish her speech instead of making her own speech, everyone thought “Wow, Beyonce really is a class act!” and Jay-Z finished off the show with his performance.
It’s old hat by now, but we’ve done a little digging on IMDB Pro and found some pretty nifty stuff. Interestingly enough, both Kanye West and T-Swizzle share the same talent agent. Coincidence?
